SCULPTURE BY KAREN GALLAGHER
When I was eighteen, I packed all my belongings in a little pickup truck and headed to a small town in Ontario, Canada. I was in search of the meaning of live. I found a place called Madona House, a small simple community of deeply devoted individuals who had given their lives to the service of God. they were to have a profound influence on the way I look at the world. When I left, I took with me a strong appreciation for simplicity in life and a deep value of the individual.
A couple of years later, married and working alongside my husband who built custom furniture, I began to experiment with woodcarving. After our first child started school, I was able to go back to school, too. I decided to major in art. I had always been fascinated with sculpture, and had already received several commissions for wood sculptures. It was in school that I began to explore the possibilities of bronze castings and stone.
At that time, I became intrigued with music and light opera. I took up the study of the violin and began music lessons. To me, music blended beautifully with my sculptures, providing inspiration for my works. Not only do I love depicting musicians, several of my works are inspired by, and named after, operattas.
Currently, I have just finished my credential work to become a secondary teacher in art and literature, and am in the process of building a home. There, I plan to continue to sculpt and practice violin. |
